BMW Integrated Safety

Passive safety development has excelled to the point where the benefits resulting from additional efforts have begun to decrease; in other words, a classical “point of diminishing returns” has been reached. Considering these limits, the question that arises is: “What are the most effective solutions in the (near) future to take vehicle safety to the next level and thereby continue to further reduce traffic fatalities and injuries?”

It has always been the general understanding of BMW that safety goes far beyond the few milliseconds of a crash. BMW is focusing on a holistic approach, based on real-world effectiveness, clearly aiming at enhanced vehicle occupant and road user protection by incorporating active safety, passive safety and post-crash technologies into one visionary concept – BMW INTEGRATED SAFETY.

Enhancing Vehicle Safety

The objective and potential of BMW´s future safety systems is to enhance the availability and utilization of the information before and after the crash in order to:
  • mitigate or even avoid the accident through advanced active safety technologies which primarily enhance the driver´s ability to respond in critical situations and, if necessary, interact autonomously
  • extend the potential of passive safety technologies
  • optimize the post-crash phase by minimizing the risk of subsequent collisions and improving the speed and effectiveness of the rescue chain
BMW Technologies at ITS World Congress

BMW is presenting production-vehicle technology and also research-vehicle technology. At the booth BMW is exhibiting numerous active and passive safety systems, driver assistance system and transponder based safety systems, e.g. full color Head-Up-Display, Blind Spot Warning, Lane Departure Warning, Automatic Emergency Call, and other vehicle safety systems like Preventive Pedestrian Protection and Active Protection. Altogether BMW’s INTEGRATED SAFETY consistsof more than 30 different features.

BMW developed BMW ConnectedDrive, which now comprises a wide array of technologies designed to more effectively connect the driver to the car and the car to its surrounding. BMW ConnectedDrive has three main pillars.
    1. Convenience – making driving easier while minimizing potential distraction
    2. Infotainment – making access to audio and phone more seamless again while minimizing potential distraction
    3. Safety – using information about the vehicle’s surroundings to make driving safer
At the BMW display, the focus will be on this last pillar, SAFETY.
Some of the features can be experienced with a live demonstration at the BMW booth like the Emergency Call, preventive front protection and different other safety systems respectively driver assistance systems.

‘BMW Integrated Safety’ for Motorcycles

Enhancing of motorcycle safety is one of the biggest challenges BMW Motorrad is facing for the future. We understand that safety is a key feature for sustainable mobility, not only for our cars, but also for our motorcycles. Therefore BMW Motorrad has always been regarded as a leader in terms of motorcycling safety. As the BMW Motorrad research continues to work on increasing these safety benefits, we are able give a vision on some unique and new safety features on the BMW Motorrad Advanced Safety Concept, such as Motorcycle Emergency Call, Advanced Rider Assistance Systems (Collision Warning, Speedlimit Info) and also V2V Technologies.
