SwRI: Environmental Management
Southwest Research Institute® (SwRI®) will demonstrate a real-time emissions data gathering and exchange system at the 2011 ITS World Congress. SwRI's Environmental Management System will implement Connected Vehicle Technology to send the emissions data from a demonstration vehicle to a central Traffic Management System. Using the vehicle emissions data, traffic management center operators can identify environmental "hot spots" along the roadway and use congestion management techniques to reduce the environmental impact of traffic. At the same time, the driver receives instantaneous emissions data, providing feedback as to how behavior, such as acceleration-braking cycles, affects the environment. SwRI, headquartered in San Antonio, Texas, is one of the oldest and largest independent, nonprofit, applied research and development organizations in the United States. Founded in 1947, SwRI provides contract research and development services to industrial and government clients. The Institute has been dedicated to improving the state of the art in advanced transportation management systems and intelligent vehicles systems for nearly 20 years.
